Perceptions of Dangerous Driving in Canada

The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) carried out a survey across Canada asking, among other things, how dangerous several driving behaviours are. The goal of this survey was not to determine the actual danger involved in the driving behaviours, but to assess how Canadians perceive dangerous driving. The respondents were asked to rate the behaviors on a scale of 1-7, with 1 as ‘not at all dangerous’ and 7 as ‘extremely dangerous’. The percentages below represent how many Canadians rated each behaviour as a 6 or 7, and reveal some interesting trends:

  • Driving Behaviours Perceived as Extremely Dangerous, by Percentage of Canadians

    • Driving while texting: 89%
    • Driving after taking such drugs as cocaine and meth: 86%
    • Aggressive driving: 78%
    • Driving after taking marijuana: 70%
    • Driving while talking on a mobile phone: 70%
    • Driving after consuming two or more drinks in two hours: 69%
    • Not wearing a seatbelt: 68%
    • Driving while tired: 65%

As automobile accident lawyers know, these are all dangerous driving behaviours. Nonetheless, it is interesting to note certain trends in popular perception. For example, it is somewhat surprising that fully 20% more Canadians find texting and driving more dangerous than drinking and driving.
