Tips on Road Safety from an Auto Accident Injury Lawyer

By Mark

We’re not sure how you feel about government—whether you welcome social security with open arms or you’re convinced that Big Brother is watching us—but regardless of your opinion, you have to appreciate any effort to reduce death and injury among citizens. Canadian roadways, surely the riskiest publicly available resource in the country, are amongst the safest in the world thanks to the efforts of orchestrated safety campaigns. In 2008, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) worked to create a framework called Road Safety Vision 2010. Now, the CCMTA has revised that strategy into the Road Safety Strategy 2015 (RSS 2015), and, as any auto accident injury lawyer knows, has made great improvements on the previous strategy.

RSS 2015 Overview

In line with the previous plan, the long-term vision of the RSS 2015 is to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world. This includes previous goals such as raising awareness of safety techniques, improving communication between stakeholders, enhancing law enforcement, and fostering more research. An auto accident injury lawyer knows, though, that there are also key differences between the 2010 strategy and RSS 2015.

RSS Key Elements

  • Flexibility: Allowing local jurisdictions more autonomy and “ownership” regarding traffic laws, road safety monitoring, and outreach campaigns.
  • Holistic Approach: Instead of focusing solely on laws, the strategy will address road users, infrastructure, and vehicle manufacturers themselves.
  • Smart Targets: The RSS 2015 abandons hard percentage targets in favour of achieving downward trends on a rate-based measure (at the national level, at least).
  • Best Practices: Recommending best practices for jurisdictions without mandating them.
  • Timeframe: The plan implements a short timeframe of five years, with a mid-term evaluation at year three.

Regardless of safety measures, accidents are bound to happen. Contact an auto accident injury lawyer if the RSS 2015 isn’t enough, and get the response you need after your motor vehicle collision.
